About the Work:
There seems to be so much information housed in our bodies. Every single one of us is truly a moving internal palace, a walking temple with a web of interconnecting rooms, sometimes hidden even from ourselves. Our bodies have their own way of blurting out truths when conditions are finally right to allow it; bridging the gap between what we feel and what we are able to express. Movement is a key vehicle for our inner world to travel up to the surface, making the interior exterior.
The vision for TEMPLE is to create space for the un-transfigured body to be released. The dancer appears first as another object in the world, fully encased in dried clay, and placed in the vast desert landscape as a statue. A heavy monument. Her thoughts and longings lodged within her hardened house of a body. She stands poised but stiff as a symbol of the immense hardening we have suffered throughout this particular time. After the shell has been cracked through some unseen external force, a new incomplete entity comes forth from the broken shards of clay. This new creature then forsakes the “shape of certainty” of a stone-like sculpture for uncertain movement.
